Kamloops This Week Wed Apr 20 2005
Opening will be grand
Monster truck, clowns and much more to help kick off Gateway
Gateway Travel Centre will celebrate its grand opening April 30 and May 1 with a myriad of entertainment events and giveaways.
Here are just some of the highlights.
A face-painting clown, who's also skilled in making balloon animals, will be on hand both days from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monster truck rides will be available both days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the cost of $5 per child.
Mutiny on the Bouncer and horizontal bungee, both at no charge, will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Also, children aged 10 or younger will be able to eat for free both days at Billy Miner's Restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner specials will be available both days.
"Our task is just beginning, said Glen Thompson, Gateway president, of what he and his partners are planning to build on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Kamloops.
Much of the 35-acre property that's dissected by Kokanee Way is still a construction site, but separate fueling stations for cars and trucks, a certified commodity scale, a convenience store and a laundromat are open already, as is Billy Miner's Restaurant.
A motel and two fast-food outlets, as well as a boat-fueling station are also part of the design but still need to be built.
Eventually, once the motel and truck service facilities get underway, about 200 people will be employed at Gateway.
After the 20-acre parcel of land west of Kokanee Way is developed, the 15-acre eastern portion will be next.
Thompson said he doesn't yet now what services to locate there, but they will have to be complementary to services already available.
