Dolphin Waterslides Open Friday July 9

Insurance Found, slides open

by AARON PATON - Kamloops This Week Staff reporter

Like a waterslide, the task of finding insurance has been full of twists and turns.

The newly-named Dolphin Waterslides opens Friday, after weeks of repairs and months of uncertainty.
"It hasn't been a thrill ride either, it's been apprehensive. ...But four guys from the States got together and put $150 million in the pot to start High-Risk Insurance. I'm lucky I found them," said part-owner Bob Altenhofen.

Insurance costs for the park crept from $8,000 to $20,000 between 2001 and 2002. It closed in 2003 after insurance costs jumped to an estimated $50,000.

Despite what he called a "substantial" cost for insurance, he said his customers won't have to bear the burden of his expenses and for now sliders will pay 2001 prices.

The park has also expanded to offer new amenities, like an improved arcade, and, has introduced hot food and ice cream to the concession stand.

"We're trying to keep everything as local as possible. We've got buffalo burgers from Medallion Meats and ice cream by Blackwell," Altenhofen said.

The waterslides have been updated to comply with today's standards and Altenhofen said his staff have made sure the slides are smooth and slippery.

Dolphin Waterslides is open daily from 11am to 7pm weather permitting.

The entrance to Dolphin Waterslides is just east of the RV Park east of the BC Wildlife Park.

For more information, please contact Dolphin Waterslides at 573-2213.

Beautifying Valleyview - one business at a time

Some boys from Valleyview Secondary are fundraising for a basketball tournament in Hawaii.

They are committed to raising their money by working rather than selling chocolates or such things. They would like to do odd jobs such as painting, pulling weeds, almost anything that is reasonable for their age group (16 and 17 years old).

They are strong, healthy and polite young men! They have worked for me at our property at A & W removing turf so that cement slabs could be installed for picnic tables. Four guys with very strong backs completed the job in under 3 hours!

Impressive !

VEBA Up-Date

We are pleased to welcome Charlie Jackson of the Daily News as our interim Secretary. Charlie has played an active part of VEBA for many years and we very pleased to have him on the executive.

Ted, Steve and Deryl had an excellent meeting with the Mayor and Council to discuss Valleyview & East. Discussed the Frontage Road Enhancement, The Bike Park, River Trail, traffic concerns around the mini storage area, improvements to the Park, the record number new businesses opening in our area, Wildlife Park, Truck Stop and many more issues. We had a good discussion and created a great rapport in working with the City for the future of Valleyview & East businesses.

Look for a color brochure being mailed out to all the Valleyview & East businesses and residences giving details of all the exciting things going on in our area.

We also joined in a joint meeting with the Chamber, SouthWest BIA, Northshore BIA and Downtown BIA and the new marketing committee for the City. They discussed the Ipsos-Reid survey results and the City's plan to improve Kamloops service for development and marketing. We believe the City has some great plans in place to strongly improve promoting Kamloops and being "business friendly".

We are in the process of reviewing a special event in the Fall, if you have any ideas, please contact Deryl.

The next general meeting of the VEBA will be Monday, Sept 13. We have adjourned the monthly meeting for the summer. If you have any ideas or suggestions, do not hesitate to call one of us or stop by my office (Deryl of Edward Jones Investments at 158 Oriole Rd) to discuss over a coffee.
