Railway ready to roll - Sat May 28

Kamloops This Week Wed Apr 20 2005

All aboard.

The Kamloops Heritage Railway will begin steam-powered railtours between Kamloops and Armstrong on May 28.

After spending eight years to restore the historic 1912 steam locomotive, and entering its fourth year of operation, the Kamloops Heritage Railway has introduced the Armstrong Explorer, a 182-kilometre round-trip.

The train departs from Campbell Creek and passes through the communities of Monte Lake, Westwold and Falkland before arriving in Armstrong for a two-hour break.

"All passengers will have reserved seating in our coaches and have unlimited access to our custom-built, covered open-air cars," operations manager Howard Grieve said.

"The spectacular scenery of the Thompson Okanagan region, combined with a steam-powered heritage train, has the potential to attract visitors from around the world."

The trip will also be offered on June 11 and 25 and Sept. 10 and 24.

Additionally, the 2141 steam locomotive will soon begin its hour-long railtour, which will depart from downtown Kamloops.

Operating Fridays through Mondays in July and August, the Bill Miner train robbery will be featured on every departure.

For more information, please contact Kamloops Heritage Railway at 374-2141.

Thompson River Veneer opening Fall 2005

Thompson River Veneer Products Ltd. wishes to announce their decision to construct and operate a Greenfield, value added softwood veneer processing operation in the City of Kamloops at the Gateway Industrial Park.

Preliminary site engineering, equipment procurement and facility design have commenced. Some of the key features of the new business include:
$ 14,000,000 in new capital investment
Start-up projected for late fall of 2005
Initial employment of 24-27 operations, maintenance and management staff in Phase 1
Employment to increase to 45-50 in the second Phase, projected within 1 year
Manufacturing jobs for the city and surrounding area
The operation will purchase B.C. produced green veneer that was formerly destined to the US and process the raw material locally with skilled B.C. labour. The majority of the value added dry veneer will be sold within the region and province, thereby assisting other provincial Engineered Wood Product and Plywood manufacturers.

The company researched several potential locations for the new business. These included Washington State, Alberta as well as other regional B.C. towns and cities. The province of B.C. became the clear choice due to the regained economic stability and future growth projections present. Clearly, the government’s leadership has convinced the Company to do business in B.C.

The City of Kamloops became the obvious choice due to availability of fully serviced industrial sites, excellent transportation infrastructure, and supply and market proximity as well as the availability of a large labour pool. The Company wishes to publicly acknowledge the efforts of the city council and management to ensure that Thompson River Veneer Products made Kamloops its new home. The recent thrust of council to examine industrial mill rates further reinforces the company’s decision to build in the "Tournament Capital of Canada".
