A wheely great bike idea

Kamloops This Week Sun May 15 2005

Dust off your handlebars and pump up your tires because Bike to Work Week is coming to Kamloops.

The province is encouraging people to cycle to and from work as part of an annual campaign to raise awareness of cycling as a convenient way to commute.

There will be events and prizes throughout the week, and businesses are encouraged to get their workplaces involved.

A group of TRU staff and students has decided to register, and is encouraging the community to get involved in the event, said Donna Mason, a TRU employee who is taking part in Bike to Work Week.

"We challenge other employees in our community to join in on the fun, and challenge employers to support these activities by showing their support for a healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting to and from work," Mason said.

"North Vancouver, Vernon and Kelowna will be holding a pilot Bike to Work Week campaign in their communities . . . Kamloops needed to do this too."

According to Linda Saunders, executive director of Bike to Work Week Victoria, participation increases each year because of employer support and the fun involved.

"People get really involved and encourage each other to try it out."

Organizers hope that as a result of their positive experience, people will continue to use bikes as their method of commuting.

Bike to Work Week takes place from May 30 to June 5. Registration is free online at www.biketoworkbc.ca.
